“Small Tasks and Duties”

A friend once told me, “The way you do one thing is the way you do everything.”The moment I heard that I made it into a personal motto. In thirty years I have not seen it once proven wrong. I have literally never witnessed someone who excelled at small tasks and checking of details who did not also excel at large tasks. Negligence of detail is likewise consistent throughout all tasks. If you want to be great, you must do small things in a great way. That is the essential point of Allen’s essay. Although he quotes Confucius to support this principle, he could just as easily have quoted the Hermetic dictum, “As above, so below.” That is a universal truth for all spheres of existence. This chapter features what I consider one of Allen’s finest insights: “You do not live your life in the mass; you live it in the fragments, and from these the mass emerges.”
